LET’S WORK: Building a Sisterhood in the Trades
Breaking barriers in the trades can be a challenge, but at Lively Technical College, two students are leading the way in creating a strong, supportive community for women in manufacturing. Since 2022, Sunny Ruby and Katelyn Whitfield have been working toward their certifications in Welding and Pipefitting. As they navigated their training, they often found themselves in the minority. Instead of letting that discourage them, they took action—forming Lively Empowers Trade Sisters With Optimism, Respect, and Kindness (LET’S WORK) with the encouragement of Director Van Camp.
LET’S WORK meets regularly to build a sisterhood that uplifts and empowers women in the manufacturing trades. These gatherings provide a space for students to share experiences, support each other, and learn from women who have paved the way in the workforce. Their latest meeting featured Phylicia D.C. Pearson, an accomplished attorney and advocate, who spoke about resilience, professional growth, and leadership. Pearson’s experience in corporate governance, risk management, and mentorship provided valuable insight, reinforcing the importance of confidence and community in male-dominated industries.
The group is always looking to expand its impact by inviting female industry leaders to share their experiences and serve as mentors. By fostering optimism, respect, and kindness, LET’S WORK is empowering the next generation of women in trades to break barriers with confidence and camaraderie. Whether you’re a current student or a professional eager to support the next wave of skilled tradeswomen, LET’S WORK is paving the way for a more inclusive and empowered workforce.
